Let’s start with a definition of these terms:
- Google is a company that named itself after a (very big) number
- Limbo is a concurrent programming language
- Inferno is a distributed operating system
- “Plan 9 from Outer Space” is a leading candidate for the worst movie ever made – and was the inspiration for the name of a research operating system called “Plan 9 from Bell Labs” (from which both Limbo and Inferno derive)
And what ties all of these things together?
Well, to start with, Google is hosting a project called “inferno-os” to get developers involved with the the Inferno operating system.
Inferno® is a distributed operating system, originally developed at Bell Labs, but now developed and maintained by Vita Nuova®. Applications written in Inferno’s concurrent programming language, Limbo, are compiled to its portable virtual machine code (Dis), to run anywhere on a network in the portable environment that Inferno provides. Unusually, that environment looks and acts like a complete operating system.
The last sentence is interesting since Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google at Stanford University where another company, Sun Microsystems, was founded almost two decades earlier. Sun’s company name is derived from the initials for “Stanford University Network” and its motto is “The Network Is The Computer” -  I assume that both Larry and Sergey learned their computer skills in this highly “network-centric” culture at Stanford.
It is not unusual for Google to fund projects started by a bunch of hackers – except that in this case the original “hackers” on this project were Dennis Ritchie, who invented the C language, and Ken Thompson, who invented Unix (along with Ritchie). And since “Plan 9″ has been ongoing at Bell Labs since 1992, perhaps the code base is now stable enough to be deployed, which would justify the rumors of “former Plan 9 engineers being on staff at Google”.
Google may be developing a GoogleOS (together with Inferno?) as part of their next business plan, if (or when) their current business model starts to falter. They have plenty of smart people, lots of money, and own one of the most powerful computing infrastrures on the planet - they have everything required to make network computing happen in a very big way.
The people at Microsoft may wake up one morning to find large portions of the Internet running as one huge (and MS unfriendly) computer – almost like it had been taken over by space aliens.
Also of note: Inferno is (or was) embeddable as a browser plugin.

Google is hosting lots of projects via their *Code Hosting Service* (http://code.google.com/hosting/).
What makes you think this one is special?
Comment by anti-hype — March 3, 2007 @ 2:32 am
They do host a number of projects, especially with their “summer of code” initiative. What makes this one interesting is:
1) rumors of them hiring former “Plan 9″ staff
2) this is one of the most flexible network OS’s yet created – if they are going to release a “Google OS”, I doubt that they will build it from scratch
3) strategy – if MS (or someone else) manages to effectively compete in search, Google needs a backup strategy – providing the best network application platform might become a new and profitable business

Uhm. Rob Pike (Mr. Plan 9) has been working for Google for a quite a while now. Plan 9 has been open source for even longer.
If you put all the areas of expertise of all its employees together, you can make a case for Google working on an OS based on Python, Perl, Java, with built-in AI, speech recognition, network transparency, natural language processing, and satellite imagery.

Google has lots of areas of expertise – but I don’t see Python, Perl, Java, etc being relevent to an OS. The demands of a network OS are very special, so *if* they are planning to do something like this, then Plan 9 would make a good starting point.
I thought that their hosting an Inferno project at this time was interesting given the speculation about a GoogleOS.
Google holds a lot of cards – how they play them is anybody’s guess.

It all leads to a possibility. I for one hope it’s true. Would put plenty of trust in a Google backed OS, as would millions of others. (Brand loyalty)

I feel the same way. I could live without Microsoft but not without Google.

Plan 9 is not the worst movie ever made. God will get you for that blasphemy!

Hey,
Great post. Nice to see Inferno getting out in the real world. Unfortunately, as the early poster mentioned, there’s really no nefarious connection between Inferno and google. Inferno is now the property of vitanuova, a british company. The gpl’ed version was released after complaints about the release system from various members of the community.
If you’d like to hack on Inferno by all means give it a try!
